报告题目:Power Architecture for the Next Generation of Data Center

报告摘要:With ever increasing current consumption and clock frequency, today’s microprocessors are operating at very low voltage and continuously switching between the “sleep-mode” and “wake-up mode” up to tens of mega Hertz in order to conserve energy. Recent advancement of CPU and GPU, by adopting the multi-core parallel processing, have demonstrated performance improvements at a rate even beyond Moore’s Law. For example, the new generation of GPU has grown into 600 cores and demands 1000 amperes of current. This rapid advancement in processor technologies has imposed significant challenge to the power delivery and management.
The current form of Data center power architecture was development based on available, off the shelf, power supplies and is deemed inadequate for the current generation of data centers. An earnest effort led by Intel, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Huawei and many others, has been underway by adopting 48V based voltage regulators with significant improvement of overall system efficiency.
This talk will address the major challenges and design options for this new generation of power delivery architecture, in terms of efficiency, power density, and manufacturability. The author will further share some thoughts on more advanced power architecture beyond the current main-stream development activities. What is perceived as an ultimate solution should be the one that is able to achieve a total system efficiency up to 90% with minimum power conversion stages and is modularized and scalable for future needs.
